Our Story
STRATA was born from the collective awareness that real change requires more than rhetoric. From a local initiative involving dozens of individuals, the organization grew into a national federation with reach across 38 provinces. We believe that real change starts from individuals willing to learn, then moving together to create measurable impact for society and the nation.
History and Background
Context of Awakening
Indonesia faces a unique paradox in the 21st century. On one hand, this country has abundant human resources, with a population of more than 270 million and a demographic bonus providing the largest proportion of productive population in history. On the other hand, the quality of Indonesia's human resources still lags behind many countries in the region. Indonesia's Human Development Index (HDI) is at a medium level, and workforce productivity is still far below its potential. Another paradox lies in the education system. Indonesia has thousands of universities and millions of graduates every year, yet many of them struggle to find jobs or create their own employment. Formal education often fails to develop the soft skills, entrepreneurial mindset, and leadership character needed in the real world. Amid these challenges, awareness emerged that solutions cannot come only from government or the private sector separately. A social movement is needed that connects various actors, youth, professionals, academics, practitioners, and community leaders, in one collaborative ecosystem focused on capacity development and impact creation.
The Birth of STRATA
STRATA (National Learning Community Federation) was born from this collective awareness. Founded by a group of learners and practitioners who realized that real change requires more than rhetoric, it requires social infrastructure that enables individuals to learn together, act together, and grow together. The name 'STRATA' was chosen deliberately. In Indonesian, 'strata' means layer or level, describing the organization's vision to connect various layers of society, from students to senior executives, in one coherent platform. In a geological context, strata are layers of rock that form the earth's foundation, a metaphor describing the organization's desire to become a solid foundation for nation building.
Evolution and Growth
Since its founding, STRATA has experienced significant growth. From a local initiative involving dozens of individuals, the organization has grown into a national federation with reach across 38 provinces. This growth was driven by natural demand from learning communities in various regions who saw the value in the collaborative model offered by STRATA. Each province is represented by a chapter or local community that operates with certain autonomy but remains bound by nationally established vision, mission, and quality standards. This federation model allows STRATA to remain responsive to local needs while maintaining strategic coherence and organizational identity.
The Future
Looking to the future, STRATA is committed to continuously developing organizational and member capacity. With targets for sustainable member growth, program expansion to various sectors, and strengthening collaboration with government, private sector, and international organizations, STRATA is determined to become one of the main driving forces in Indonesia's social-economic transformation.
